How Hands-On Essays Came to Be
It began with a simple question from a friend, "Will you teach my kids to write?" I'd been a freelance writer and homeschooling mom for years, but had never considered teaching anyone else how to write. My friend was persistent and soon I agreed to teach one trial class at a local bookstore.
Since I couldn't find a writing curriculum that embodied all of the aspects I felt were important in teaching writing, I created my own curriculum. Within a few years that one class had evolved into five different classes covering various aspects of writing, along with seminars to instruct parents in the fine art of teaching writing. I began receiving requests to teach classes all over my city, more than I could possibly fulfill, so I started searching for ways to multiply my efforts. Hands-On Essays is my first curriculum to reach publication. It's an attempt to duplicate what happens in my classes so students can experience it in the home or school setting.
I believe that writing instruction should be simple, straightforward, and fun. The methods used in Hands-On Essays are the same techniques I use in the classroom with tremendous success. It's my greatest hope that students will not only improve their writing skills with Hands-On Essays, but will also conquer the fear of writing and learn to embrace it as an enjoyable, rewarding experience.
