Essay Prompt #14
A soapbox is a makeshift platform where a person can stand to be seen and heard above a crowd. It’s used by those who have strong feelings about an issue and want others to hear their viewpoint.
When someone says he has a soapbox issue, he is referring to an issue about which he feels strongly.
Write an essay about your soapbox topic. Show others why this is a really important issue.
-If you have trouble choosing a topic, think about what affects you emotionally. What gets you fired up and mad? What makes you so sad you want to cry? Those are soapbox issues for you.
-This essay is likely to be emotionally-charged. After all, this is your soapbox issue! However, strong emotions can turn a reader away if not handled properly. Make sure you are using persuasive techniques rather than just blaring opinions.
-The word “you” can make the reader defensive, especially when you are addressing a topic with great emotion. It can make the reader feel as though you are preaching at him or her. It would be better to write your essay in first or third person, rather than in second person.
