Hands-On Essays | About
It began with a simple question from a friend, “Will you teach my kids to write?” At the time I’d been a freelance writer and a homeschooling mom for years, but had never considered teaching anyone else how to write. My friend was persistent, though, and soon I agreed to teach one class for homeschoolers at a local bookstore.
Within a few short years that little class evolved into multiple classes, five writing curriculums, and seminars to instruct parents in the fine art of teaching writing. Hands-On Essays is the first of the writing curriculums to reach publication. It’s my attempt to duplicate what occurs in my writing classes so that students can experience it in the home or school setting.
Today, I reach out not only to students, but also to help adult writers. Through my blog, Encouraging Words for Writers, and through a weekly email of the same name, I offer a continual boost of encouragement, inspiration, and instruction to help writers on their journeys. I also speak in a variety of venues from writing conferences to homeschool groups.
Writing is my passion, the fire in my bones. It’s the thing I could do every single day of my life and be perfectly content. I hope that passion shines through everything I write and teach.
The wise person makes learning a joy… Proverbs 15:2 (NLT)
